Background

In Indonesia, where 48% of the population consumes at least one type of medication daily, the challenge of medication management for the visually impaired is significant. A study from the Pharmaceutical Journal (2020) reveals that 22% have accidentally consumed expired medication, and another 30% have worried about doing so. This problem is compounded by the fact that most product packaging is inaccessible, forcing them to rely on others for help. The urgency is clear: without the ability to independently verify expiration dates, millions face serious health risks daily. Expirate was created to address this critical need.

The Problem we're trying to solve :

Direct Health Risk - A significant number of visually impaired individuals (22%) have accidentally consumed expired medication, which can be ineffective or even dangerous.
Inaccessible Packaging - Standard medication packaging is not designed for the visually impaired, making it impossible for them to read critical information like expiry dates on their own.
Dependence on Others - The lack of accessible packaging forces visually impaired individuals to rely on help from others, which compromises their independence and privacy in managing their own health.
Constant Uncertainty and Anxiety: - Many users (30%) live with the worry that they might have taken expired medication, creating daily stress and uncertainty around a routine task.
Lack of an Independent Solution - There is a clear absence of a reliable tool or method that empowers visually impaired individuals to verify medication safety by themselves, highlighting a critical gap in assistive technology.

Solution

To tackle this issue, Expirate was developed with a user-centric approach and advanced technology. Our core solution employs a Machine Learning model using the Word Tagging method, trained on a diverse dataset of ±2,790 expiration date formats to achieve 98% accuracy. This vision-based OCR technology enables real-time, on-device detection, allowing the app to function without an internet connection and protecting user privacy. The development process emphasized close collaboration between designers and developers, resulting in an intuitive interface fully integrated with iOS's VoiceOver accessibility feature to ensure a seamless and independent user experience.
